This film, which has recently been released in the US, tells the story of
an Auschwitz-survivor returning to Italy via the Soviet Union in 1945. It
was mostly filmed on location in Ukraine and has several railway sequences
featuring Er and L class locos. There is also one sequence supposedly in
Poland showing a clapped-out tank engine (? 9P ?) adorned with PKP eagle
plates.

The railway photography is of a very high standard with dramatic lighting
and angles. However, the sequences are short and I would not particularly
recommend seeing the film unless the story is of interest too. Overall,
though, I thought it was excellent.

The only serious error that I noted comes near the end of the film when a
displaced persons (refugee) train enters Munich Hbf where it is met by a
jeepload of American Military Police handing out cigarettes to the camp
survivors. Firstly Munich Hbf has only 4 or maybe 6 platforms and secondly
the train is hauled by a class L loco complete with red star on the
smokebox door. The producers should at least have found a class TE
(Kriegslok) for that sequence - and made sure it didn't have a red star on
it !
